Design and Planning of Automated Container Terminal, APM Terminals, Virginia, USA, 2004

Designing and optimizing processes for the medium-sized semi-automated container terminal developed by APM Terminals in Portsmouth, Virginia. The terminal has unmanned rail-mounted gantries and mini straddle carriers for transport between quay cranes and the yard.

Seaport Innovations' responsibility was to select cost efficient handling technologies, refine the layout of the terminal, define and manage the necessary simulation studies, as well as the validations of the simulations against actual operations, provide advice on the terminal planning and design, supervise the process reengineering and optimization of manual (conventional) processes, and supervise production of required functional specifications for IT-system designs.
