Prior to becoming a principal of Seaport Consultants Canada Inc,, Gordon Payne led Empire Stevedoring's coast-wide port activities and played a key role in the development of Vancouver's container business. Empire Stevedoring Co. Ltd is one of Canada's largest stevedoring and terminal operating companies which now operates as Terminal Systems Inc.
Past positions include President & C.E.O. of International Stevedoring Services Ltd., and the founder, President & C.E.O. of Meridian Stevedoring Co. Other senior management positions in the British Columbia stevedoring / marine terminal industry include General Manager of the Vanterm Container Terminal, and Manager of the Centennial Container Terminal and multi purpose break-bulk terminal, and the CPR and CN Terminal in Vancouver, B.C. Mr. Payne began his career as a deck officer in the British merchant marine. He is a graduate of King Edward VII Nautical College, London, England.
Gordon Payne has extensive expertise in the container, CFS, break-bulk, intermodal, and cruise industries, including privatization projects and contract negotiations. He has conducted numerous port studies in Canada, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Hong Kong, Singapore, Barbados, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa and Venezuela. He has also provided litigation support in the port sector as an expert witness.
